Atropine Drop Therapy for Myopia Control

Low-dose atropine eye drops are an at-home treatment option that may help slow myopia (nearsightedness) progression in children.

Myopia often starts in childhood and can increase as kids grow. Myopia management is about more than clearer vision today—it's about helping reduce the rate of prescription change over time.

Atropine therapy is commonly used as a once-nightly drop. Your doctor will recommend an appropriate concentration and follow-up schedule based on age, prescription, and how quickly myopia is progressing.

Myopia management aims to slow progression and support long-term eye health.

How it works
Atropine is a medication used in eye care for many years. In low doses, it can be used to help slow myopia progression. The exact mechanism isn’t fully understood, but it is believed to help reduce signals that contribute to the eye lengthening over time.

Atropine does not “cure” myopia—children will still typically need glasses or contact lenses—but it may help slow how quickly the prescription changes.

What to expect
We start with a comprehensive exam and myopia control consultation. If atropine is a good fit, we’ll review how to use the drops, what side effects to watch for, and when to return for monitoring.

Possible side effects
Side effects depend on concentration. With low-dose atropine, many children have minimal issues, but some may experience mild light sensitivity or near blur. We’ll tailor treatment to maximize benefit while keeping your child comfortable.

Other myopia control options
Atropine can be used alone or in combination with other myopia control options such as Ortho-K, multifocal contacts, or Stellest lenses—depending on what’s best for your child.
